KB2010010403: Install guide for xn-client

Overview

The installation procedure depends on which operating system is beeing used:
Installation on DEB based Linux distributions (e.g. Debian, Ubuntu)
Installation on RPM based Linux distributions (e.g. RedHat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, SUSE)

Installation on DEB based Linux distributions

Get the URL for the latest xn-client version for your operating system and system architecture from the Download Center .

Download the package to the vserver:
wget http://www.xncore.com/download/xn-client(...).deb

Install the package:
dpkg -i xn-client(...).deb

As soon as the installation process is finished the service of xn-client will be startet automatically. For starting or stopping it manually use:
/etc/init.d/xn-client (start|stop|restart)

Next you have to ensure that the hostname for xn-client matches the Xen DomU name. In case it doesn't match you have to start xn-client using the option "-n vservername". You can set this value in the config file "/etc/default/xn-client" .

To ensure that xn-mem is able to manage the memory of the vserver in an optimal way and to ensure the vserver is not using all available memory for buffer and cache, the not actively used buffer and cache memory will be dropped on a regular basis. This might slow down vservers which for example make heavy use of MySQL and MyISAM databases. You should use the option "-c" in that cases to disable this feature. This option cat also be set in the config file "/etc/default/xn-client" .

Important: If you are using vservers running Linux kernel 2.6.18 or older please pay attention to the following KB article:
